Jake’s “Family and Friends” Record Collection

I got the idea as I became more enamored with Vinyl as a medium for listening to music. I happen to have a nice technics sitting around and so instead of buying MP3s I began buying Vinyl that gave codes to download free MP3s. And then I started thinking, I’m ultimately going to be giving this collection (Vinyl) to Jake one day and I thought – why don’t we collect from our friends and family 1 record (not physically) that they’d (or YOU) recommend and why so we can add it to Jake’s library. Remember, you can only pick 1 and it’s more important to turn in something rather than nothing.

Here’s a list of folks we have recommendations for Jake to listen to:

Jason Grimes, Dad
Pearl Jam, Ten
It was difficult to choose 1 album, but what this did for music, not just Seattle music, but helped capture pure Generation-X angst and helped each us learn that it wasn’t enough to sit and complain about how things are, you must get involved. Take a stance.

Jessica Cannon-Grimes, Mom
It’s only taken me 5 years but I definitely have it nailed down to Weezer, Blue for Jake’s record collection.

It represents a joyful time in my life. College, venturing out on my own, animal trainer, NO boyfriend and just completely happy to be me. Going to the beach and listening to the waves by myself at night.

So poetic yet in hindsight I had no idea.

The world is your oyster and you can be or do anything you want in life. That’s how everyone should feel when they are in college. And that was exactly how I should have felt. And that was exactly what I should have been doing. And that is exactly what I felt and what I did. And Weezer is the sound that represents pure freedom for me. Authentic freedom that I didn’t need friends or a boyfriend to validate me. AMEN!

This is what I want for Jake, to always be unique and always know that he is enough and he will always be enough and that he shouldn’t be afraid to be different as long as he stays himself and allows himself to explore and be himself and be completely comfy in his JAKE boots.

Cindy Grimes, Grandma
Take This Job And Shove It, Soundtrack
Not much to say, the title says it all

Toby Iven, Cousin
The Cave Singers, Welcome Joy
So I was debating with myself between several albums, mainly the fleet foxes’ debut and all of the cave singers’ releases. I think I am going to go with Welcome Joy. It is so calming and warm. Pete Quirk has such a unique singing style and it really comes out in this album. Start to finish it has great flow between songs, and when the album comes to a close it leaves a feeling of inner peace and placidity.

Emily Troxy, Aunt
Madonna, Holiday
It has my fav M song: “Holiday” – it also has some classics, Lucky Star, Borderline, Everybody. I picked this album because it was the beginning of the making of a superstar. “Holiday” is like a universal theme song for Madonna music as it is a positive, feel good song to bring everybody together.

Justin Penna, Uncle Justy
Tool, Undertow
I believe that this album was a huge part of all genres of music but especially the progression of rock. The late 80’s rock was still lingering around into the early 90’s and Maynard and the boys came in and brought a whole new outlook on rock and I can still hear bands today in their music that are influenced by this album and band. Not to mention it was recorded in 1992 at legendary Sound City (Nirvana-Nevermind and many others as well!). Released in 1993.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Essentials Lynyrd Skynyrd [Discs 1 & 2]
Every west coast music fan should have at least one southern rock album so when they are on a random road-trip through the south, they’ll know what’s playing in the background while they stop at a country bar in the middle of nowhere Georgia. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a classic.
